| Eating BLUE KITCHEN is not the only way to SPICE UP YOUR LIFE. Ever considered salsa dancing? |
What the....? Who the....?
BLUE KITCHEN employees Fidel & Mollie Nicholson prepare for another hot night on the salsa dance floor. |
"Salsa" means "sauce" and serves as an apt descriptor for the spicy styles it encapsulates. The term refers to a wide variety of Afro-Cuban music styles such as mambo, rumba, chachacha & others. Salsa was first used as a marketing term in the 1970's, when Latin musicians in New York were looking for a simple way to describe their brash, new sound.

If you're looking for some good Salsa music, there's no better place to start than from the selection of titles available through the Putumayo label. Putumayo is considered by many to be a pioneer and leader in developing the non-traditional music market. In the past fifteen years, the label has become known primarily for its upbeat and melodic compilations of great international music characterised by the company's motto: “Guaranteed to make you feel good!” The company’s commitment to helping communities in the countries where the music originates has led to the label contributing more than $1 million to worthwhile non-profit organisations around the world. Charitable recipients include Coffee Kids, Oxfam, Mercy Corps, Amnesty International and many more.
Putumayo’s CD covers feature the distinctive art of Nicola Heindl, whose colourful, folkloric style represents one of Putumayo's goals: to connect the traditional to the contemporary.
From African salsa to Cuban son, the "Afro-Latin Party" CD (above) showcases the Latin sounds heard in nightclubs from Dakar to Havana. BLUE KITCHEN recommends this CD, along with the "Latin Jazz", "Salsa Around the World", & "Nuevo Latino" Putumayo titles.
As an added bonus, every Putumayo CD has a comprehensive booklet with detailed track listings, information about each artist in the compilation, and a unique recipe - usually featuring chilli as a major ingredient.
